On display in the Outdoor Exhibition Zone of the Jinju National Museum are diverse stone cultural assets including the Three-story Stone Pagoda in Beomhak-ri, Sancheong (National Treasure No. 105) as well as a member of the pagoda excavated from Guyang-ri, Haman and the main body of a stone pagoda excavated from Jukjuk-ri, Hapcheon.
This is a typical stone pagoda from the Unified Silla period with a three-story main body erected on top of a two-story stylobate. Carved into the upper stylobate are eight armored divine guardians of the Buddha and Buddha-Dharma carrying a weapon, and there are four bodhisattvas giving an offering carved on the first story of the main body. The unique combination of the carvings of the divine guardians and bodhisattvas serves as an important indicator of the stone pagoda style of the 9th century Unified Silla, and this demonstrates the exceptional sculpture techniques and Buddhist art of the time. The pagoda left its home in Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do Province in 1941 before being erected at the Jinju National Museum 77 years later in 2018.
